After getting your SIM card at TPE airport, here is how you can get to Chiayi City:
- Follow the direction to take Taoyuan Airport MRT
- Get off at A18 Taoyuan HSR station
- Buy HSR ticket and hop on HSR train to Chiayi
- You will be in Chiayi HSR station after 1.5 hours
- Take a taxi to your destination in Chiayi for about NTD 100 per person
- Or take the free shuttle bus to Chiayi city center by presenting your HSR ticket

To take MRT, you can buy a single ticket for TPE airport to HSR station from ticket machines nearby or an Easy Card 悠遊卡 from the counter next to the station entrance. You can put money in the Easy Card and use it to take public transportation throughout Taiwan or purchase items from convenient stores (7-11 Seven Eleven, Family-Mart, etc.)
If you will be traveling in Taipei, Kaohsiung or Taichung, having an Easy Card can be quite handy. Please note that you can not purchase tickets for others with your Easy Card. In other words, everyone traveling in a group would need to have their own Easy Card. Most cases, public transportation in Taiwan charges per distance rather than per time. Hence, there is no ticket for 90 minutes as Norwegian public transportation does.
Please note: food and drinks (including water and chewing gum) are not allowed in MRT zone as the picture shown below. Violation will lead to a fee of 1500NTD. Please respect this rule as the main factor why the MRTs are kept clean and enjoyable for everyone. Food and drinks are also not allowed on public buses. Yet this is more of an unspoken rule than an actual law (which means that you won't get a fine doing so but the bus driver or other passengers might ask you to NOT drink and eat on the bus.)

- For a non-reserved seat, claim your ticket any time during the chosen date
- For a reserved seat, please arrive at the counter in advance and ask if any reserved seats are available (subject to availability, no extra charge)
- Show your ticket and passport to the staff near the entrance gate
- The pass is valid for 1 journey on a Taiwan High Speed Rail train
- Your voucher will expire 90 days after the date it was issued

Step 5-6.
Once you arrive at Chiayi HSR station, you may simply walk out of the main entrance/exit and find many taxis waiting outside. Normally, they charge about 100NTD/person driving to Chiayi Train Station (20-25 minutes, around 16 km). If you are going somewhere else, just take this price for your reference. Most of the taxi drivers don't speak much English, so the easiest way to let them understand where you are going is by showing them a route on google map.

Most taxi drivers are honest. Still, to avoid being scammed, it is best to agree on a price to the destination before hopping on the taxi. Double check that both parties understand and agree to the term you have set together.
