【Taiwan】SIM card & Data - discount and hacks

To prepare you for your visit to Taiwan, I will be presenting some useful information here.

Today, we will be focusing on how we can be in touch with one another by purchasing different SIM card plan for you and your family.

There are 3 major telecom companies in Taiwan: Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信),  Far Eastone (遠傳), and Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大).

Chunghwa Telecom is a national telecom company with the best reception especially in areas outside the city centers (e.g. on the mountain or near the coast.) Hence, I personally recommend this company as your first choice.

For visitors, there are 2 fitting plans Chunghwa Telecom provides:

  • Day Sim Card & unlimited data (valid according to the purchase)
  • Prepaid sim card & limited data (valid for 16 - 60 days)

Day Sim Card in Norwegian Kroners / Klook

With Day Sim Card, you will have unlimited data to call, text, watch videos, share hotspot, etc. online. Also, you have NTD 50-430 to call (to another mobile or landline) or text.

You can purchase one at Taoyuan Airport or order one online via this Klook page and pick it up at the airport.

The offer Klook provides is cheaper than in-person purchase and you can get a discount of another NTD 100 by registering Klook with this link.

Please note:(as stated on the web-page)

  • Airport's service time for pickup
  • The phone must support SIM card and be unlocked from a prior cellular carrier
  • You must be at least 20 years old to purchase a SIM card and present the boarding pass
  • Only 1 SIM card can be redeemed per person
  • The unused money will not be returned after the expiry date
  • SIM card pick up from any Chunghwa Telecom Counter in Taoyuan International Airport
  • Upon pickup, 2 forms of identification needed to be presented. (You can present your passport and an official ID (with photo) from your native country (such as social security card, ID card, or driving license)
  • For more information, please refer to the official purchase website.

If you are traveling as a group and there is no need for everyone to have their own unlimited data, you can also purchase a pre-paid SIM card for NTD 300 (NTD120 to call & text with 1GB.) This pre-paid card should last 16 days or 60 days depending on your deal.

You can also purchase this pre-paid card in Taoyuan International Airport or in certain Chunghwa Telecom stores in many cities in Taiwan.

Same rules above also apply to this method.

Cheers, and welcome to Taiwan!
